Algae coating for food packaging fulfils EU directive

The algae-based coating for food packaging from the British company Notpla has now also been officially recognised as plastic-free by the Dutch government. The Netherlands is currently carrying out the strictest assessment within the EU directive on the use of plastics.

The British company Notpla's algae-based coating for food packaging has now also been officially recognised as plastic-free by the Dutch government. According to Notpla, the Netherlands currently has the strictest assessment of the „non-plastic“ definition within the EU directive on the use of plastics.

The Notpla coating made from marine algae and plant extracts is exempt from the EU directive on single-use plastics. The technology enables an inner coating for food packaging that retains moisture and fat in the food. This natural solution replaces conventional plastic coatings. Notpla packaging can be can be recycled together with paper or composted at home. In an assessment, the global sustainability consultancy Eunomia Research & Consulting confirms that Notpla Coating fully fulfils the EU directive and therefore does not fall into the plastic category. It is categorised as a natural polymer that has demonstrably not been chemically modified.

Another positive assessment came from the Dutch government - the country that is currently of all EU Member States has the strictest stance in the enforcement of the EU Single-Use Plastics Directive (SUPD) by levying a tax on single-use cups and containers containing plastic.

„Eunomia has concluded that the polymer used by Notpla in its packaging products can be defined as a natural polymer that is not chemically modified and therefore does not qualify as a ‚plastic‘ under the EU SUP Directive. This sets Notpla apart and fits perfectly with our mission to reduce society's dependence on plastic. This important milestone also means, that packaging coated with Notpla is exempt from upcoming bans, labelling requirements and taxes on single-use plastic food packaging in all European countries. In the case of the Netherlands, Notpla coating is the only approved plastic-free technology to date and the only solution that food companies can rely on to comply with regulations.“
