Spice manufacturer McCormick & Company is switching the packaging of its Old Bay brand from plastic back to tin. With this step, the company is taking up the historic original packaging of the well-known seasoning mix and will be relaunching it in stores from December 2025.

Old Bay, a seasoning brand that has been established for decades, will once again be available in a metal tin. According to McCormick & Company, the familiar design will be retained, while the packaging material will change from plastic to tin. The aim is to build on the original user experience and the historical brand image. The change will affect regular retailers and is effective from this month

Packaging change with brand reference

The return to the tin can is expressly understood by the company as a return to the brand's history. To accompany the packaging changeover, Old Bay is launching a limited marketing campaign.

Significance for packaging and brand

The move from plastic back to metal stands out against the backdrop of current packaging trends, many of which are focussing on plastic reduction and alternative materials. Metal cans are considered durable and easy to recycle, but are more material and cost-intensive than plastic packaging. McCormick & Company sees the decision primarily as a strategic brand move that emphasises tradition and recognisability.
