Origin Materials and Royal Hordijk Packaging have announced a strategic partnership to produce PET bottle caps on a large scale in Europe. The aim is to improve the recyclability of packaging and promote sustainable solutions.

The Dutch Hordijk Group brings over 100 years of experience in packaging innovation and will use its PET extruders to produce extruded sheets for Origin's CapFormer production lines, according to a statement. These lines, operated at Hordijk plants in the EU, mould the PET sheets into bottle caps, including tethered caps in the future. Origin CEO John Bissell emphasised that the combination of Hordijk's manufacturing expertise and global reach will enable cost-efficient production and the manufacture of billions of PET caps.

Sustainable packaging solutions

According to Hordijk CEO Rik Hennink, the partnership is in line with the company's goal of developing recyclable packaging and reducing environmental impact. PET lids from Origin are designed to improve recycling processes, enable lightweight construction and extend the shelf life of products. The market volume for such closures is estimated at more than 65 billion US dollars.
