Packaging Day: What characterises good packaging

To mark Packaging Day on 4 June, the German Packaging Institute (dvi) asked consumers what makes good packaging. One result: sustainability dominates even in coronavirus times.

To mark the 6th Packaging Day on 4 June 2020, the German Packaging Institute (dvi) asked consumers in Germany, Austria and Switzerland what makes good packaging.

The result of the social media campaign under the Hashtag #goodPackagingThere are many reasons why packaging is good and useful for the individual - from hygiene and convenience to design. However, it is also clear that The importance of sustainability, which dominates even in Corona times.

From disinfectant bottles to sauerkraut bags

What makes packaging good packaging for people? For the 6th Packaging Day, consumers and companies were able to share their personal packaging favourites for a month under the hashtag #guteVerpackung share on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. The spectrum of packaging submitted ranged from hygiene dispensers to preserving jars, yoghurt pots, coffee capsules, fruit nets, flexible bags for sauerkraut, modified atmosphere packaging, reusable containers for food to go and bottles and bags for milk through to folding cartons for soap, perfume, tea or card decks.

Kim Cheng, Managing Director of the German Packaging Institute (dvi), which has been organising the annual „Packaging Day“ since 2015, is delighted with the variety of good packaging submitted.

„Packaging is indispensable. Each and every one of us needs it every day to ensure that we have a safe and hygienic supply of food and everyday goods. But packaging is not just a must-have when security of supply, health and sustainability are required. It also shines in the free programme, for example when it comes to sensual enjoyment and aesthetics, multiple uses, practical application aids or the joy of giving gifts.“

This is demonstrated by the #goodPackaging campaign: Among the absolute Sustainability is one of the top arguments in favour of good packaging.

„Packaging has numerous functions and fulfils numerous needs. The reasons that make packaging good packaging for the individual are correspondingly numerous. Despite the diversity, however, it is also very clear that the sustainability aspect is of outstanding importance - for consumers and companies alike! Among the good packaging submitted are Solutions for reusable and multiple use, reduction of packaging, use of renewable raw materials and recyclability and much more. For us at the Deutsches Verpackungsinstitut e. V., this is a clear sign that sustainability and recyclability are the key to the future. Even in Corona times and will continue to play a central role in the future.“
