„Better with Less“ - packaging design without compromise

Metsä Board's „Better with Less - Design Challenge“ invites designers to develop more environmentally friendly packaging concepts.

The „Better with Less - Design Challenge“, a competition organised by the European premium fresh fibre paperboard manufacturer Metsä Board, is taking place for the second time this year. Designers are invited to develop more environmentally friendly packaging concepts for online retail, cosmetic products and food.

Prize money and an internship

In the four categories of cosmetics, e-commerce, food packaging and „Wildcard“, applications can be submitted from now until 5 January 2020 at http://www.betterwithless.org ideas can be submitted. Invited are Professional packaging designers and specialised students from all over the world.

The main prize of the Better with Less - Design Challenge is endowed with 7,000 euros, the second prize with 2,000 euros and the third prize with 1,000 euros. As an additional prize, the participating design students will be awarded an internship with Metsä Board's packaging design team at its centre of excellence in Äänekoski, Finland. The winners will be announced in spring 2020.

Sustainability and brand experience as a goal

The high proportion of plastic in the packaging sector is a cause for concern worldwide. One reason for this is that almost nine million tonnes of plastic end up in the sea every year. The aim of the Better with Less - Design Challenge is to develop innovative, sustainable and recyclable packaging solutions for Articles of daily use.

The first edition of the Better with Less - Design Challenge was organised by Metsä Board in 2017/2018. With more than 300 packaging concepts submitted from 38 countries, the competition was a great success. The winner was a highly innovative packaging made from cardboard, Environmentally friendly alternative solution to bubble wrap.

The World-class jury includes renowned packaging design experts: Alissa Demorest, Editor-in-Chief of the luxury packaging magazine „Formes de Luxe“, Andrew Gibbs, Founder, Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief of Dieline, Charles Ng, Founder and Chief Brand Consultant of MCL Group in Hong Kong/China, Clark Goolsby, Chief Creative Officer of Chase Design Group, and Stefan Junge, Professor of Packaging Technology at Beuth University of Applied Sciences Berlin. The competition chairman - and member of the jury - is Ilkka Harju, Packaging Services Director, EMEA and APAC at Metsä Board.
