The Czech company Myco has developed a new material based on mycelium - the root network of fungi - and thus offers a fully compostable alternative to conventional plastic packaging. It has now received an award for this.

Packaging made from expanded polystyrene (EPS) is increasingly being criticised for being difficult to recycle, based on fossil raw materials and non-biodegradable. An alternative now comes from nature - and is called mycelium. The company Myco from the Czech Republic has developed a packaging material based on mycelium that not only does not require any harmful additives, but can also be completely degraded after use.

The bio-based material is created through the controlled growth of mycelium on industrial by-products such as sawdust, hemp shavings or paper waste. It serves as a natural „glue“ that binds the fibres together. Chemical binders are not necessary. The result: a mouldable, resistant material that is visually and functionally similar to polystyrene - but significantly more environmentally friendly.

Compostable, safe and low-energy production

According to Myco, the material is completely biodegradable within a few weeks - either in compost or directly usable as organic fertiliser. In incineration plants, it burns residue-free, without toxic emissions. At the same time, production consumes significantly less energy than the manufacture of synthetic plastics.

The material can be processed to be soft and flexible or stable and impact-resistant - depending on the desired application. It is heat-resistant up to around 100 °C and offers good barrier properties against impact, moisture and temperature.

Initial applications - and potential for more

Myco already offers its packaging in several markets, including Germany. Applications to date have mainly been in the area of shipping and protective packaging, for example for electronic devices or furniture components.

In the future, the company also sees potential in other sectors, such as the construction industry, the automotive sector and fashion. Packaging made from mycelium could be used in future where foaming plastics are still used today.

Award for eco-innovation

Myco was honoured with the Czech-Slovak „Sustainability Star Award“ 2025 for the development of the material - one of the most prestigious awards in the region for sustainable product and material innovations. The jury emphasised the combination of ecological impact and practical industrial application.
