Numerous start-ups are trying out alternatives to conventional plastic. Hanover-based founders Fabian Solf, Steven Widdel and Christopher Feist are part of this group. Under the Papair brand, the trio has developed an air cushion insulation that is made from 100 per cent recycled paper and has already been registered for a patent.
PapairWrap combines safety, cost efficiency and sustainability. Due to its high flexibility, it is versatile and moulds to the product to be protected. According to the company, it can also be disposed of in waste paper, meaning that the paper fibres can be recycled up to 20 times. Thanks to the complete use of recycled paper, it is also completely biodegradable. Compared to plastic-based packaging, the production of PapairWrap also saves CO2-emissions can be saved.
The start-up from Hanover is currently in the final phase of product development and is transferring the developed process to industrial standards. The production site is located in Rethem an der Aller in Lower Saxony. The commissioning of a pilot plant is imminent. The market launch is scheduled for the 4th quarter of 2022.
