On 18 October, the 6th European Paper Bag Day will draw attention to the use of paper bags. Multiple use can save resources, for example.

„An important aspect of customer satisfaction is the longevity of paper bags. But a high-quality paper bag offers many more advantages: it is made from renewable raw materials, is biodegradable (without releasing microplastics), can be reused and therefore reduces the environmental impact. They are also easy to print with consumer information and convey a sustainable brand image.“

Elin Gordon, Secretary General of CEPI Eurokraft

Paper bags are made from kraft paper, which was specially developed for fibre-based packaging. The raw material for this kraft paper is long cellulose fibres, which are obtained from thinned wood and process waste from the sawn timber industry and come from sustainably managed European forests. The fibres are processed in such a way that they adhere well to each other during paper production. This gives the paper a high tear resistance and makes it hard-wearing. This enables Material savings and minimises the use of resources. The choice of adhesive and the well thought-out design of the handles make the paper bags even more stable and durable.

Guidelines for paper bags

The European kraft paper and paper carrier bag industry produces paper bags that carry at least six kilograms and can be reused five times. Only recently, „The Paper Bag“ published guidelines for high-quality paper carrier bags. The document contains information for converters and their customers and provides information on the parameters that influence durability. In this way, the necessary conditions can be jointly created to ensure optimum bag quality.

The durability of paper bags can be tested on the basis of the European test standard EN 13590. This standard serves as the basis for the quality certification system for paper bags. It is based on approved standardisation bodies and is intended to help retailers avoid using inferior carrier bags. A paper bag can be labelled with the weight and volume it can carry.

„Trust your bag!“ - with this motto the 6th European Paper Bag Day raise awareness of how reliable paper bags are. The focus of the annual campaign day on 18 October is on the particular robustness of paper bags, which makes it possible to transport a variety of items and reuse them several times.
