Together with Ekornes, the largest furniture manufacturer in the Nordic region, Mondi is introducing a paper-based packaging solution for mattresses, replacing the previous plastic solution.
Ekornes uses Mondi's re/cycle CompressWrap to pack mattresses securely and protect them during transport. The mattress packaging consists of two components: A compression wrapping and a secondary packaging. In the first step, Mondi's FunctionalBarrier Paper 95/5 ensures durability and vacuum sealing during the compression process thanks to its thin coating.
In the second step, the compressed and rolled mattress is covered with provided with outer packaging made from Mondi's FunctionalBarrier Paper Reduce, which offers excellent sealing properties to protect the high-quality mattress during transport.
The new solution replaces Ekornes' previous plastic packaging and offers an alternative made from fibres as a renewable raw material. As part of Mondi's re/cycle portfolio, the company's FunctionalBarrier Paper offering is designed for recycling in accordance with 4evergreen's „Design for Circularity Guidelines”. In addition, the new CompressWrap solution runs seamlessly on the existing machines from Ekornes and makes the switch from plastic to paper packaging both convenient and cost-effective for the customer.
This innovative paper-based mattress packaging allows consumers to easily remove the mattress without a knife or cutter, making unpacking safer. Mondi will launch its innovative solution live at Fachpack in Nuremberg, where CompressWrap will also be presented with the renowned German Packaging Award 2025 in the sustainability category.
