BillerudKorsnäs launches a recyclable paper-based tubular bag packaging on the market. It challenges the standard for confectionery packaging.

Together with Syntegon Technology, BillerudKorsnäs is launching a recyclable paper-based tubular bag packaging on the market. The new packaging solution is designed to enable a switch from conventional plastic to renewable and recyclable materials. It is based on Primary fibres from sustainably managed forests. It is suitable for packaging chocolate bars and other confectionery with medium to high barrier requirements. BillerudKorsnäs has filed a patent application for the new product.

Retrofit kit enables production of tubular bag packaging made of paper

Syntegon Technology has developed a retrofit kit for paper packaging for processing on existing flow-wrapping machines. The new paper-ON-form Retrofit kit is the centrepiece of a new technology for the production of paper packaging. Extensive tests have shown reliable output rates without any loss of speed.

This proves that paper tubular bags can keep up with the machine performance of plastic tubular bags. The moulding unit and sealing tools can be used for different types of paper, regardless of thickness and manufacturer. According to Syntegon, this makes paper packaging a genuine, sustainable alternative.

„We are delighted to bring a paper-based, recyclable flow-wrapping solution to the market. With the Syntegon paper-ON-Form retrofit kit, it can be produced on existing horizontal flow-wrapping machines from Syntegon Packaging Systems.“ Peter Åström, Project manager for recyclable tubular bag packaging at BillerudKorsnäs

The solution was developed at Syntegon's development centre in Beringen, Switzerland. It consists of a tubular bag moulding unit and the corresponding sealing tools. The kit is already being existing systems from international manufacturers for the packaging of chocolate bars in paper used.

„To make flow wraps future-proof, we take a holistic approach. In our test lab, we focus on three elements: Avoidance. Recycling. Recycling. Our retrofit kit enables customers to switch to paper packaging on their existing horizontal flow-wrapping machines - without any loss of speed.“ Christoph Langohr, Project Manager for horizontal sustainability packaging at Syntegon Technology
