In 2022, Heinzel Group purchased a decommissioned paper machine at the Steyremühl mill from Finnish paper group UPM. The machine is now to be converted to produce sustainable kraft paper for flexible packaging.
The Heinzel Group will take over the Steyrermühl site from the Finnish paper group UPM on 1 January 2024 in accordance with a purchase agreement from 2022 and shortly thereafter build a New range of unbleached and bleached kraft papers to the market.
„This is the first step in our plan to develop the municipality of Laakirchen with the Steyrermühl mill and our neighbouring Laakirchen mill into a European centre for sustainable packaging papers and renewable energy. The new paper grades will perfectly complement our existing range and enable us to offer sustainable products to replace fossil-based packaging solutions.“

The Austrian machine manufacturer Andritz has received the corresponding order. The machine will be delivered Start-up 2024 to produce up to 150,000 tonnes per year of brown and white kraft paper with low grammage, which are marketed under the established Starkraft brand.

Werner Hartmann, COO of Zellstoff Pöls AG
The Steyrermühl paper mill, currently still owned by UPM, has a long tradition in the manufacture of high-quality graphic paper products. The Conversion of the machine enables the plant to enter the growing market for packaging paper. The newly produced kraft paper grades are used to manufacture carrier bags, pouches and other flexible packaging products. UPM currently operates a paper machine for newsprint production, a sawmill and a residue power plant at the site, which is co-owned by Heinzel Group subsidiary Laakirchen Papier. UPM plans to continue operations unchanged until the end of 2023 and then discontinue the production of graphic papers in Steyrermühl.
