Ranpak is expanding its portfolio with GrasiKraft, a void filler made from grass and recycled paper fibres. The sustainable material combines lower water consumption with a contribution to the circular economy and relies on renewable resources for packaging solutions.

Ranpak Holdings Corp., supplier of sustainable packaging solutions, has announced the launch of its new GrasiKraft paper. The material combines grass fibres with recycled paper fibres and is the world's first grass paper to be offered as a standard product for cavity fillers. According to the company, GrasiKraft offers advantages such as a lower water consumption during production and the use of grass as a renewable fibre source that contributes to the circular economy.

The paper was developed in collaboration with Creapaper, a company researching grass fibres as a sustainable material source. The development process involved extensive testing to ensure that the material had the required stability and was compatible with Ranpak's existing packaging converters.

Grass is seen as a particularly renewable resource that Harvested several times a year can be used. GrasiKraft uses fibres from marginal agricultural land to minimise transport routes and use the land efficiently. The grass can also come from rewetted moorland, which preserves habitats with high biodiversity.

„We are very excited to add GrasiKraft paper to our product offering. As our first commercially available paper material that uses grass as a fibre source, this milestone is an important step as Ranpak continues to evaluate the most sustainable materials. We believe that single-use packaging should be recyclable and sourced from renewable resources to protect our world for future generations, and the renewable properties of grass as a material make it perfect for this.“

Omar Asali, Chairman and CEO of Ranpak

GrasiKraft paper is fully recyclable and biodegradable. With visible grass fibres and a softer feel, it highlights the commitment to sustainability and remains part of the circular economy.

„Having switched to paper-based packaging materials some time ago to demonstrate our commitment to sustainability, we see grass paper as an exciting step forward, both in terms of our commitment to the environment and our customers“ unpacking experience. We have been using GrasiKraft for our packaging for several months now and it not only meets our performance standards but also feels softer to the touch, which has resulted in positive customer feedback."
