With the introduction of a new flowpack solution from the Pure Line, SÜDPACK is offering a sustainable packaging alternative for fresh pasta products. The mono films based on polypropylene (PP) or polyethylene (PE) combine recyclability with high functionality and efficiency in processing.
Whether ravioli, tortellini or gnocchi - fresh pasta is a popular convenience product and has become an integral part of chiller cabinets. Manufacturers are increasingly turning to flowpacks for their packaging: transparent pouches that use minimal material, offer product protection and enjoy a high level of acceptance among consumers. SÜDPACK is responding to this trend with a new generation of sustainable mono-material-based flowpacks. .
The Pure Line from SÜDPACK comprises high-performance films made of PP or PE, which are characterised by their recyclability and position themselves as a fully-fledged alternative to conventional composite materials. Based on internal life cycle analyses (LCA), the recycling rate of Pure PP films is stated to be over 90 percent. In addition, the new bags are lighter than conventional packaging concepts - the packaging weight has been reduced by a further seven per cent. .
Improved carbon footprint and material efficiency
Compared to conventional PA/PE composites, the flowpacks enable CO₂ savings of around 27 per cent. The ecological advantage is even clearer when compared to heavier trays, which are also frequently used for fresh pasta. The lower weight has a positive effect on transport emissions and disposal costs along the entire supply chain. .
In addition to sustainability, the films also impress with their technical properties: they offer a high oxygen barrier for extended shelf life, stability despite low material thickness and high transparency for an appealing product presentation at the point of sale.
Machine compatibility and process reliability
A frequent obstacle to the introduction of new, sustainable materials is the lack of compatibility with existing packaging lines. SÜDPACK meets this challenge with distinctive coextrusion expertise. The new flowpacks can be processed efficiently on existing machines without any loss of output. Thermal treatment, such as pasteurisation, is also possible with the PP mono films without any problems. .
More than just packaging: sustainability as a strategic goal
At SÜDPACK, the expansion of recyclable product lines is not only related to regulatory requirements such as the planned EU packaging regulation (PPWR). The company sees sustainability as a strategic field of action: SÜDPACK joined the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) in 2022 and received platinum status from EcoVadis in 2025. .
To support its customers, SÜDPACK offers comprehensive LCA services to transparently assess the ecological performance of various packaging concepts. In addition, more and more customers are turning to SPQ (Sustainable Print Quality) printing, which not only reduces ink and solvent consumption, but also optimises the carbon footprint of the packaging - while maintaining the same colour brilliance and print quality.
Consistent focus on the circular economy
With the expansion of the Pure Line, SÜDPACK is reaffirming its commitment to a functioning circular economy in the packaging industry. Recyclable mono films and sustainable production processes should help to reduce plastic waste and at the same time meet the growing demands of retailers and consumers.
