In its ESG Summary 2024, PepsiCo emphasised the progress made in the area of packaging. According to the company, its vision is to make packaging recyclable, focussing on reduction, recycling and innovative materials.
In 2024, PepsiCo was able to reduce the use of virgin plastic by 5 % compared to the previous year and increase the proportion of recycled plastic to 15 %. In addition, 93 % of packaging in the core markets is already designed to be reusable, recyclable or compostable.
Goals and progress
The company aims to save an average of 2 1TP3 tonnes of new plastic per year by 2030 and to increase the proportion of recycled material to 40 1TP3 tonnes by 2035 at the latest. By 2030, 97 1TP3 tonnes of packaging should meet the criteria „reusable, recyclable, compostable“. In addition to global collection and recycling initiatives, PepsiCo is investing in EPR programmes and testing digital sorting technologies such as „Oscar Sort“.
Innovation and reuse
New material solutions such as paper packaging for Quaker products in Brazil or Snack A Jacks in the UK complement the strategy. At the same time, PepsiCo is expanding its reusable range - for example with SodaStream, Reusable cups in the out-of-home sector and pilot projects such as the Petaluma Reusable Cup Project in the USA.
Political commitment
At international level, PepsiCo supports the Business Coalition for a Global Plastics Treaty to promote a legally binding UN agreement against plastic pollution.
