Henkel has optimised the cardboard-plastic packaging for its Persil 4in1 DISCS. They now have a post-consumer r-PP content of 50 per cent. The solution developed jointly with Greiner Packaging has now been honoured with a packaging award.

The joint further development focussed on improving the sustainability properties of an existing cardboard-plastic packaging for pre-dosed detergent products through Contribution of a 50 per cent post-consumer r-PP share. Here, the new K3-F cardboard-plastic combination scores particularly well thanks to the combination of packaging with appealing marketing communication and a positive contribution to the environment.

This weight-reduced combination helps to save up to 40 per cent plastic compared to the previous packaging. The use of 50 per cent recycled plastic subsequently reduces the use of new material by half. The 4in1 DISCS packaging not only impresses with its sustainability properties, but also in terms of its technical functionality.

Sustainable packaging solution for Persil 4in1 discs

„We have set ourselves ambitious goals for sustainable packaging and want to work with our partners along the value chain to drive forward a circular economy,“ explains Eduardo Celada, International Packaging Manager Laundry Care at Henkel. „The use of recycled material plays an important role here - and the innovative packaging of Persil 4in1 DISCS is a good example of the progress we have already made: We use more than 90 per cent recycled cardboard for the casing and the plastic tubs are made from 50 per cent recycled r-PP material. With the new packaging we rely on a two-layer process: The inside of the plastic tub is made of white new material, which guarantees an optimum colour contrast to the colourful detergent DISCS. The outer layer of the packaging, on the other hand, contains recycled plastic, which is obtained from end consumer households. The greyish colour of the layer is irrelevant to the appearance of the packaging - because it is encased in an attractively printed cardboard sleeve.“

The sustainable tub packaging for the pre-dosed detergent products also enables better recycling: Thanks to the patented separation system, the cardboard sleeve and plastic tub can be easily separated from each other by the consumer and dispose of them separately. This means they are 100 per cent recyclable. The lower proportion of plastic in the packaging also helps to reduce CO2-emissions, while the stability of the container is guaranteed by the cardboard coating.

Perfect design solution for global brand owners

In the case of K3-F packaging, the plastic containers and the folded cardboard sleeves are delivered to Henkel separately. The wrapping is only unfolded by machine and placed over the container directly before filling. This process is ideal for global branded goods manufacturers who offer their product in different markets or under different brands and therefore with a variety of decorations. This ensures a high degree of flexibility in design and stock levels can be reduced to a minimum.
