Together with packaging manufacturer ALPLA, Henkel has taken a further step in the area of sustainable packaging: Perwoll bottles in Western Europe are now not only fully recyclable, but also contain 25 per cent recycled PE (polyethylene) as standard - this is recycled plastic from end consumer households.
„The introduction of bottles made from 25 per cent recycled plastic for the Perwoll brand is an important step for us - because it means we are using recycled plastic in our largest category in the detergents and cleaning products sector, which uses packaging made from PE plastic,“ says Vineet Varman, Head of International Packaging Development for Speciality Detergents at Henkel.
The packaging and supply chain team at Henkel has succeeded in developing a significant proportion of recycled PE into the entire range of Perwoll bottles on the Western European market, while retaining the unique colour and high aesthetic standards of the bottles - without compromising on the performance or fragrance of the premium product.
„This is a great success - and also the starting point for further progress: We are already working on utilising this recycled material in other categories,“ says Vineet Varman. „Although the availability of high quality recycled PE material from consumer household plastic waste is still limited, we are proud to have successfully established a recycled supply chain with our partners,“ says Vineet Varman. „The use of recycled material makes this bottle a particularly sustainable, CO2-saving packaging solution - also because we manufacture the bottles in-house in direct connection with production at Henkel, which reduces transport routes and repackaging to virtually zero. We value the cooperation with customers like Henkel, who challenge us and contribute to a functioning circular economy,“ says Nicolas Lehner, CCO of ALPLA.

Black Perwoll bottle - complete recyclable, with recycled Plastic
For the black bottle of the „Renew & Repair“-Henkel announced that it would be introducing recyclable black packaging - and accordingly began converting its black Perwoll bottles. The new packaging material uses an alternative, soot-free colour, which makes the bottles recyclable and can therefore be reintegrated into the value chain. This means that the black bottles are not only recyclable, but also contain 25 per cent recycled PE.
Commitment for one Circular economy
The introduction of bottles containing 25 per cent recycled plastic for the entire Perwoll range in Western Europe is another example of Henkel's activities and progress in the area of plastic packaging. The company has set itself ambitious packaging targets, is involved in various partnerships along the entire value chain and participates in many cross-industry initiatives.
For example, Henkel is a member of the global Alliance to End Plastic Waste (AEPW) and the New Plastics Economy (NPEC) as well as a partner of the social enterprise Plastic Bank.
