Competitions are an excellent opportunity for young designers to demonstrate their skills and attract the attention of potential employers and investors. At this year's PIDA Awards, which recognise innovative and forward-thinking packaging design, a solution from students at Stuttgart Media University stood out in particular.
The undisputed winner was the Stuttgart Media University (HdM) from the Packaging Design Impact Award (PIDA) Germany/Austria competition. She received three of the four PIDA prizes: the prizes for innovation and user-friendliness as well as the most prestigious prize, the PIDA Gold Award. With the „Snap Dragon“ project, the winner of the Gold Award also received the prize for user-friendliness. Lisa Frey, Annika Wahler and Tabea Kasparian are behind the winning design.
„Even as a child, I was fascinated by snapdragons - that's what Snap Dragon is called in German. This flower inspired our work,“ says Tabea Kasparian. „We feel honoured and are delighted with the prizes. - We didn't expect our opening mechanism to be so well received.“
Inspiration from nature
Every year, the PIDA participants are presented with a new task. This time, they were to be inspired by the motto „It's a Wild Life“ and take inspiration from nature for their packaging concepts. „Snap Dragon realised this perfectly. The flower of the snapdragon as inspiration for an opening mechanism that works just like the flower - that convinced us completely„, reports Thomas Reissig, chairman of the German-Austrian jury.
In addition to the PIDA Gold Award, other prizes were awarded for innovation, user-friendliness and sustainability. The prize for innovation („Highest Level of Innovation“) went to Piranha Bites, a packaging for a dental care set by Emma Schüttoff and Kevin Semjancuk from the HdM Stuttgart. The award for sustainability („Highest Level of Sustainability“) went to Basilisk Tequila. This original packaging for four tequila bottles was inspired by the basilisk, a multi-layered mythical figure. The packaging was designed by Alexa Cach and Magdalena Unterholzer from the WerbeDesign Akademie (WDA) in Salzburg.
BillerudKorsnäs, the company behind PIDA, organises the competition in collaboration with leading universities and design colleges in Germany, Austria, France, Belgium, the UK, China and the USA. The competition offers students the opportunity to work on a real packaging project under the same conditions as a typical customer order. At the same time, they can demonstrate their talent and impress established professionals who are looking for ideas and inspiration at PIDA.
