The Plastics Industry Association (PLASTICS) and the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) have decided to merge. Together, they want to represent the entire plastics value chain - from research to industrial application - under one roof.

The two organisations announced that their boards have approved the recommendation of a working group to merge. The aim of the initiative, entitled „Better Together“, is to pool the expertise of both organisations and strengthen the industry in the areas of sustainability, research, training and representation of interests.

„This is a historic day for the plastics industry,“ said Matt Seaholm, President & CEO of PLASTICS. According to Seaholm, the new structure combines market and political expertise with technical expertise. SPE CEO Patrick Farrey also emphasised the expanded opportunities for members as a result of the merger, which is intended to create „a stronger platform for further training and global networking“.

The merger is expected to be completed by the end of 2025. From 1 January 2026, SPE will operate as an independent division within PLASTICS. Patrick Farrey will then assume the role of Executive Vice President of SPE and Chief Integration Officer to lead the integration and ensure continuity.

According to the associations, SPE members will retain their membership status and existing benefits. Both sides expect the new organisation to play a central role in the international positioning of the plastics industry - from scientific training to the representation of interests in politics and society.

Background

PLASTICS was founded in 1937 and is recognised as the leading voice of the North American plastics industry, while SPE has been known worldwide as a network and knowledge platform for plastics engineers and researchers since 1942. The merger will create an organisation that combines expertise, market analysis and political representation.
