Power plant for residual materials

Rondo Ganahl wants to take another step towards a circular economy. The company is focussing on a power plant for waste materials from Vorarlberg. Residual materials are to be used to generate energy.

At an event followed by a guided tour of the paper mill Rondo about the planned residual fuel power plant. The event attracted around 50 interested people who wanted to find out more about the project and the circular economy at Rondo.

The company showed how High-quality corrugated base paper from waste paper and how impurities and fibres that are too short are separated out as residues during waste paper processing. These can later be utilised in the power plant as a raw material for energy generation.

„At Rondo, we live the circular economy. The collected waste paper is not only used to produce base paper and, in a later step, corrugated cardboard packaging. We also produce high-quality cast fibre products from the same raw material. This shows how resource-efficient and sustainable our products are. Rondo's plans to build a waste-fuelled power plant reinforce its commitment to a production process that does away with fossil fuels and effectively recycles its own waste materials.“

In future, the paper mill will cover its own thermal energy requirements with the waste-fuelled power plant. Thanks to a connection to the Frastanzer E-Werke grid, surplus heat will be supplied to the local Frastanz brewery and up to 500 additional households. The power plant is mainly fuelled by residues from paper production and the Vorarlberg industry.

There was a lot of interest in the environmental compatibility of the power plant. Andreas Neuper, Project Manager Energy Supply at Rondo, explained the advanced methods of flue gas cleaning, which meet the latest technological standards. He also drew attention to the expert reports that have been prepared regarding Environmental compatibility, emissions, odour, noise and human medicine and fall below all limit values.

With this project, Rondo is emphasising its commitment to more sustainable and environmentally friendly production and demonstrating ways in which industry and environmental protection can go hand in hand.
