Digital printing solutions are replacing older packaging production processes and optimising the way in which parcels are personalised, addressed and dispatched. In just one pass, the Memjet print heads print all colours and details on neutral corrugated cardboard packaging.

The new era of packaging production is based on inkjet technology. Digital colour inkjet solutionsMemjet, for example, print millions of ink drops per second extremely quickly in a single pass during the print job, are very cost-effective and produce exceptional quality.

This combination of different functions offers several key advantages. "Large format inkjet printing in one pass on corrugated board or liner can offer significant cost advantages over applying labels in many cases," says Kevin Shimamoto, Managing Director of Large Format Technology at Memjet. "Not only are label materials more expensive than kraft or premium board, printing directly onto the packaging materials also saves Time and increases the Productivity. In addition, there is no need to build up and store label stocks or dispose of waste at great expense.

Customised packaging

Boxmaking-Machinery GmbH, based near Dortmund, has already recognised the clear benefits of inkjet printing on corrugated cardboard for the packaging industry. Managing Director William Demke has been working in the packaging sector since 1997 and founded his own packaging company in 2012. Since then, he has been able to expand his business activities to Personalisation of packaging for a large customer base of sales partners in Germany. In 2012, Demke saw a presentation of Xante's large format printing solution, which inspired him to add customised corrugated cardboard outer packaging to his product portfolio in 2015.

Display

Today, the company is very successful with its customised packaging solutions. More and more customers are using this packaging innovation and personalising their packaging with images and messages that create relationships with their customers. This personalisation often includes address details.

Address and dispatch details

"Many of our customers don't even realise that Address and dispatch details directly on the packaging can be printed," explains William Demke. "Part of our educational work therefore consists of advising interested parties on what is possible today in the field of customised packaging." Today's technological advances in inkjet printing, Demke continues, allow companies to print packaging however they want, be it with product information, order and address details or stock numbers. The possibilities are endless.

"Appearance makes all the difference if you want to attract customers," says Demke. "That's why many of our customers choose specific address details as part of the packaging they send to prospective customers. Address details can be customised and give the packaging a unique look. Customised 'look and feel'. In this way, a higher level of value can be communicated."

Customised printing

The company receives variable data files from its customers to provide packaging with customised address details. Boxmaking-Machinery then uses the IQ software of the Xante Excelagraphix 4800 printer to create files containing images and address details that can be printed directly onto the packaging.

The Xante Excelagraphix 4800 ensures that each package individually and in full colour is printed with the address details and images requested by the customer and customised for the recipient. This not only makes a great impression on the customer, the process also saves a lot of time and waste compared to the use of labels. Managing Director Demke assumes that the demand for address printing will increase in the future as more and more companies realise the benefits of direct printing on packaging.
