In a joint publication, BASF and the cyclos-HTP Institute comment on the mechanical recycling of coextruded polyamide-containing flexible packaging films (PE/PA multilayer films). The companies have analysed the recyclability and recyclability of the materials for the PE film stream.
The independent testing and certification organisation cyclos-HTP has the Recyclability of PE/PA multilayer films systematically investigated on behalf of BASF and confirmed in June 2021. Co-extruded PE/PA multilayer films with PA6 and PA6/6.6 concentrations of up to 30 per cent were used in the tests with the aid of adhesion promoters.
cyclos-HTP has tested these in accordance with the established CHI test standard for their recycling compatibility and capability in the PE film stream from commercial sorting processes of household-related flexible plastic packaging waste tested. The company is already using the results for the differentiated certification of the recyclability of individual flexible PE/PA packaging structures in the sense of individual case testing of packaging structures previously categorised as non-recyclable.
The publication states that the Reproducible proof of the recyclability of PA as a material in general and the recyclability of PA-containing PE film structures in particular could be achieved. It goes on to say: „In a normal recycling stream from household waste, it is very unlikely that this limit (dispersion limit of 10% in the recyclate) will even be approached.“
The results and conclusions of these investigations are now available in a 25-page publication available.
