DS Smith is now cooperating with the US company TemperPack. The aim is to introduce ClimaCell thermal inserts. These provide more sustainable insulation for temperature-sensitive goods such as packaged meals, perishable foods and medical products.
The product made of paper and bio-based materials can be easily and conveniently recycled by the consumer after use. simply added to the waste paper cycle and thus recycled. It replaces EPS foam (expanded polystyrene), which is difficult to recycle and of which over 350,000 tonnes are used in packaging every year. Only a third of this plastic waste is recycled in Europe.
„DS Smith is committed to paving the way for a circular economy. To do this, we often rely on partnerships to rapidly develop and introduce more sustainable solutions. I am very pleased to announce our collaboration with TemperPack on the ClimaCell product. This concept has already proved its worth in the USA. We therefore want to use this innovative Solution for protecting temperature-sensitive goods now also available in Europe bring. This will enable us to expand our offering within the circular economy.“ Marc Chiron, Sales, Marketing and Innovations Director of DS Smith Packaging
This partnership is all the more important becausehen the Covid-19 pandemic was proven to significantly drive the growth of the e-commerce market. Investigations of DS Smith have recently shown that European consumers plan to continue or increase their online grocery shopping (62 %) and home meal ordering (49 %). With such a strong change in shopping habits, both partners believe that by introducing sustainable solutions such as ClimaCell, they can ensure the transition to a circular economy and avoid a significant increase in waste.
ClimaCell as a sustainable alternative to EPS
ClimaCell thermal insoles are a patented thermal insulation barrier with cushioning protective properties. They are ideal as a replacement for problematic plastics such as EPS foam, which is still used in most cases to protect temperature-sensitive goods during transport.

As part of its recently introduced sustainability strategy „Now. And in the future.“ DS Smith is pursuing the goal of promoting the circular economy through packaging and recycling. One of the focal points is the Replacing problematic plastics with more sustainable alternatives.
