The Belgian packaging manufacturer Van Genechten Packaging (VGP) is now presenting transparent paper films made from renewable, wood fibre-based raw materials, which are fully recyclable in combination with the solid board.

Folding carton producer Van Genechten Packaging has now developed new folding cartons for manufacturers in the food and cosmetics industry. Paper solutions for transparent viewing windows launched on the market. They are designed to give brands the opportunity to become even more sustainable.

„Our customers are faced with a growing dilemma: on the one hand, viewing windows significantly increase the attractiveness of the packaging, the product and the brand and allow for direct customer communication. On the other hand, many consumers today expect packaging to do without plastic. When combined with cardboard, plastics are often difficult to separate. We can solve this challenge with our Paper Windows - with perfect transparency, semi-transparent or matt, depending on the desired appearance.“ Marc Büttgenbach, Chief Sales Officer of Van Genechten Packaging

The window films offered by VGP are based on renewable, wood fibre-based raw materials and are biodegradable and compostable. They are fully recyclable together with the solid cardboard so that the consumer no longer has to laboriously separate the film from the cardboard for correct disposal.

Cellulose fibres as the basis for highly functional paper films

Just like paper and cardboard, paper films are made from cellulose fibres. However, due to the special treatment The same functionalities are achieved as with a comparable plastic film. The material is 100 per cent food-safe, available in various sizes and thicknesses and with different properties. Highly effective barrier functions, e.g. against grease and oxygen, are just as possible as water vapour permeability or high puncture resistance. The latter is particularly useful for packaging sharp-edged products such as dry pasta.

"Sustainability and integration of viewing windows are no longer mutually exclusive. Even customers who previously shied away from plastic viewing windows can now rethink their packaging designs - without compromising on product performance,“ explains Marc Büttgenbach.

From food to personal care: the right viewing window for every product

The paper films are also very flexible in terms of appearance. Depending on the product and customer requirements as well as the required application size, VGP offers three different options, from crystal-clear viewing windows for perfect transparency to matt, glossy and semi-transparent ones. The Highly transparent design is often used for muesli packaging, for example. Manufacturers of loose tea like to use a White or semi-transparent look. Another semi-transparent version is ideal for smaller viewing windows, e.g. for pasta or personal care products.

Can be flexibly combined and integrated into existing processes

The paper film from VGP can be easily integrated into any cardboard packaging and processed on existing production systems without any additional technical effort. Paper Windows can processed on all standard packaging machines so that customers do not have to make any procedural changes.
