Mondi has brought together industry leaders at a round table in Spain. The experts discussed how used paper sacks from the construction industry can be kept in circulation. Mondi has already implemented a pilot project for this purpose in Spain.

The event, which took place in Madrid on 16 November 2023, addressed the question of how systems can be set up to prevent the disposal of used paper bags and how an efficient process can be established for the disposal of used paper bags. Collection, sorting and recycling on an industrial scale can be realised.

The partners present were representatives from various areas of the value chain, namely Mondi, Envalora, Neinor Homes, OHLA, Arpada, Macotran, RCD Asociación, Sebastian Solís, Uder, Alier, Saint Gobain and CoCircular. These industry leaders share the vision of Promote the circular economy of paper bags used in the construction industry, and see cooperation and dialogue with interest groups as a decisive measure to achieve this.

The event follows a successful pilot project by Mondi, which a collection and recycling system for used paper bags in Spain has set up. The project was launched because paper bags used in the construction industry are currently not recycled on a large scale, resulting in the loss of valuable fibres. In this pilot project, various construction companies and specialised collection companies for construction and demolition waste have joined forces to recycle the Collection of used paper bags on construction sites, transport and recycling of these. This pilot project provides a functioning concept for improving the circular economy of used paper bags.

„Improving the circular economy of used paper bags in this industry is crucial and our successful Spanish pilot project shows that this can become a reality - but Mondi cannot do it alone. We need committed partners at every stage of the value chain to work closely together and create a successful model that can close the loop. This initiative - the first of its kind in Spain - is a clear example of our commitment to working with industry partners across the value chain to increase recycling rates for used paper bags - and helps us to develop an approach that can be scaled across Europe and into other industries.“
