Saperatec is presenting its pioneering patented process for recycling composite packaging in Düsseldorf. The process produces film-capable plastic recyclates and aluminium, which can then replace new raw materials in high-quality applications such as packaging.
The wet-mechanical recycling process of Saperatec is geared towards sustainability: In a hot washing process, the composite materials are delaminated solvent-free after mechanical preparation using water-based release fluids. After subsequent sorting, the cleaned plastics are mechanically recycled. Aluminium is also carefully cleaned and returned to the raw material cycle. The aluminium used in this process Process chemicals are reused more than 30 times and all comply with European regulations for food contact materials without specific migration limits.
Saperatec's recycling process for composite packaging offers the Potential to reintegrate a large number of previously limited recyclable packaging types back into the material cycle. Initially, the company will focus on flexible packaging and tube packaging with an aluminium foil barrier as well as the recycling of plastic and aluminium from beverage cartons.
At the Dessau site, the company is building its first Recycling plant for composite packaging made of plastic, aluminium and paper. The industrial recovery of film-capable plastic recyclates and aluminium from composite packaging is planned from 2023. Initially, around 18,000 tonnes of packaging waste are to be processed per year.
