The Ukrainian start-up Releaf Paper has developed a technology for producing paper from the fibres of fallen leaves. The company has now received a grant of 2.5 million euros to set up a pilot plant as part of the European Commission's EIC Accelerator 2022 programme.
Releaf Paper had submitted a project to the EU Commission for a pilot line in which a self-developed and patented technology Cellulose obtained from the fibres of fallen leaves and processed into paper will be realised. The total cost of the submitted project amounts to 3.5 million euros, of which the European Commission will now finance 2.5 million in the form of a grant.
The EU Commission has also agreed to make additional investments in the further scaling of the project. In accordance with the approved development plan, Releaf Paper will use the investment funds to to set up two further production lines in various countries within the next five years, the company announced via its social media channels.
As part of the European Commission's European Innovation Council programme, a total of 1.7 billion euros was made available for „breakthrough innovations“. The sub-division EIC Accelerator is endowed with a total of 1.16 billion euros and intended for start-ups and SMEs.
With Releaf technology, the large quantities of biowaste generated by leaf fall in autumn can be put to good use and turned into environmentally friendly paper bags. The leaves are not only a source of cellulose from which paper is produced, but also an affordable raw material and substitute for wood cellulose.
Releaf collects leaves from residential areas, city parks and pavements, cleans them of all solid matter, dries and granulates them. In this form the raw materials can then be stored all year round.
Releaf Technology Research and Production Enterprise was founded in Ukraine in 2021. The company's headquarters are located in Kiev. Today, the company works with contractors from all over the country to produce paper and paper bags, which are sold via our own webshop.
In 2022, Releaf already more than 100 tonnes of paper per month and has worked with international customers such as L'oreal, Schneider Electric, Samsung, Weleda and Ariston Thermo.
