Neste, the world's leading producer of renewable diesel and renewable aviation fuel and an expert in drop-in solutions for renewable chemicals, and REMONDIS, one of the world's largest private recycling, services and water companies, have agreed a development co-operation for the chemical recycling of plastic waste.

The two companies want to jointly develop and promote chemical recycling with the aim of creating capacities for processing more than 200 kilotonnes of plastic waste.

Working together for climate protection

Mechanical plastics recycling has been making a positive contribution to the circular economy for decades, on the security of supply of raw materials and to protect the climate. The joint project now combines the expertise of Remondis in the Waste collection and separation with the experience and expertise of Neste in the Oil refining and the processing of low-quality waste and residual materials. The aim is to Building an ecosystem around chemical recycling, This will enable other companies along the value chain to join the initiative and supplement chemical recycling by closing the material cycle for plastics that are currently difficult or impossible to recycle.

Creation of new, high-quality plastics

Chemical recycling processes plastic waste into raw materials from which the plastics and chemical industry new, high-quality plastics, chemicals and fuels can produce.

“In order to establish chemical recycling on an industrial scale, the recycling and chemical sectors must work closely together. The partnership between REMONDIS and Neste is focussed on developing an optimal recycling process so that even more plastic waste can be recycled”

underlines Jürgen Ephan, Managing Director, REMONDIS Recycling.

The collaboration between REMONDIS and Neste marks a further step towards the innovation and investment needed to future-proof the recycling industry. Capacities, technologies and supporting legislation are needed to achieve the EU's ambitious recycling targets. Chemical recycling will play a central role in this.

“Our aim is to create a healthier planet for our children. Together with REMONDIS, one of our sustainability-focussed partners in the value chain, we can significantly expand the possibilities of reusing previously non-recyclable materials through chemical recycling. Chemical recycling means that carbon can circulate in society again and again and reduces our dependency on crude oil - one of our core objectives as a pioneer in our industry in terms of sustainability. The partnership between REMONDIS and Neste brings us one step closer to fulfilling our pledge to process more than one million tonnes of plastic waste every year from 2030 onwards.”

says Mercedes Alonso, Executive Vice President, Renewable Polymers and Chemicals, Neste.
