In future, the Edeka Group will dispense with the usual plastic lids for many own-brand milk products in 500g tubs. As an alternative, Edeka and Netto Marken-Discount are the first retailers to offer reusable fresh lids. In this way, over 300 tonnes of plastic can be saved every year.
The packaging of private label dairy products such as yoghurt or skyr in bulk packs (500 g) usually consists of a plastic cup, sealing film („board“) and a plastic lid. The consumer can use the lid to reseal the product and store it in the fridge for a few days.
Reusable plastic lid
After that, the lid usually goes in the bin - but that's now a thing of the past: Edeka and Netto Marken-Discount are now offering the first „topless“ tubs. To ensure that the products remain fresh, the retailers have developed a Reusable silicone lid developed. Once purchased, it can be reused many times at home and therefore scores highly in terms of eco-balance compared to the conventional disposable solution.
Edeka will start at the beginning of November, when eight products from Gut&Günstig, Edeka and Edeka Bio will be delivered in 500g pots without plastic lids. Netto Marken-Discount has already put several 500g yoghurt and pudding pots without plastic lids on the shelves. The matching reusable fresh lids for resealing and multiple use are also available. available from November in packs of two for €0.99 in Edeka supermarkets.
Sustainability all along the line
Avoiding and optimising packaging has been an important concern for Edeka for years. The association pursues a holistic approach: the basic principle is to avoid packaging consumption wherever possible. If avoidance is not possible, Edeka relies on the principle of „Reusable instead of disposable“. In addition, the use of recycled raw materials is being stepped up.
