The food banks find themselves in a dilemma: the number of people using the 947 organisations nationwide is increasing. On the other hand, the food banks are barely able to save any more food and distribute it to those in need. „This development is alarming,“ warns the Chairman of Tafel Deutschland e.V., Jochen Brühl.

Background to the acknowledgement: As part of the Charity campaign „Give. Share. Live.“ of Rewe and nahkauf, the food banks in Germany have Food worth 2.42 million euros in addition. The result was achieved by the stores offering their customers a bag of six ja! items to donate to the local food bank from 4 to 17 November.
The contents consisted of long-life foodstuffs that will be a useful addition to the food banks' usual offerings for the needy in the coming weeks: rice, spaghetti dish with tomatoes, vegetarian tortelloni, tomato cream soup, nut nougat cream and biscuits. The donation bags handed in by customers were collected in a campaign box in the supermarket. Volunteer Tafel employees collected the bags and distributed them to the socially and economically disadvantaged.
At the end of the campaign, Rewe extended the Customer donations of almost 500,000 filled bags Rewe also donated 40,000 euros worth of food and drugstore items that the food banks wanted. Since 2009, customers and Rewe have donated almost 20 million euros worth of food through the food bank campaign weeks.

Rewe and the food banks have been working very closely together since 1996. The retailer's stores and warehouses donate food to the local distribution centres every day. These are mainly fresh products that are no longer sold but can still be consumed without hesitation. This makes the company one of the largest supporters of the food banks in Germany.
