Dutch premium fruit juice producer Riedel has once again opted for SIGnature Pack Full Barrier from SIG, this time for its Appelsientje Biologisch product line with 100% pure and unsweetened fruit juices. The polymers used for the aseptic carton pack are linked to plant-based, renewable raw materials.
Riedel is SIG's first Dutch customer to choose carton packs made with ASI-certified aluminium. SIG was the first company in the industry to enable customers to demonstrate their commitment to the responsible sourcing of aluminium with the certification of the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) to prove its worth. SIGnature Pack Full Barrier offers outstanding product protection for light- and oxygen-sensitive products such as orange juice.
For the product line Appelsientje Organic, which is available in five varieties, Riedel has opted for combiblocPremium 750ml with SIGnature packaging material decided. The cardboard packaging consists mainly of FSC®-certified raw cardboard, which is made from the renewable raw material wood. The polymers with which the cardboard is coated are linked to plant-based raw materials via a mass balance system to 100%.
This means that for the polymers used in the SIGnature Pack, an equivalent amount of bio-based raw materials has been used in the production of the polymers. To ensure the integrity of this process, the mass balance procedure is audited by an internationally recognised third party in accordance with the ISCC PLUS standard certified.
Sustainability all along the line
The CO2-The footprint of SIGnature Pack Full Barrier is lower between 34% and 60% (depending on format and country) than a standard SIG carton pack of the same format - confirmed by a life cycle assessment study (CB-100733 dated 1 March 2019) carried out by the independent IFEU Institute in accordance with the relevant ISO standards (ISO 14040 and ISO 14044).
SIG is committed to offering customers perfect packaging solutions. This is also reflected in the close collaboration with Riedel over more than two decades. SIG and Riedel have worked together to bring the most practical and sustainable packaging to the market, in line with the latest trends and to meet the changing needs of consumers.
„At Riedel, we are committed to using responsibly sourced fruit and to being committed to sustainable fruit growing and sustainable production, bottling and distribution. By choosing SIGnature Pack for our popular Appelsientje juices and being the first in the Netherlands to use ASI-certified aluminium, we are able to offer consumers the most sustainable and highest quality packaging. We have already successfully used SIGnature Pack for our CoolBest range and we expect a similarly good response from consumers to Appelsientje in this packaging.“
Bas Boswinkel, Managing Director at Riedel
First in the Netherlands

By choosing to use ASI-certified aluminium for the relaunch of one of its best-known brands, Riedel has achieved another first in the country.
„Riedel was the pioneer in launching SIGnature Pack on the European juice market - first with CoolBest and now with Appelsientje. Our two companies are in perfect synergy. We will continue our exciting partnership to bring the most sustainable products and packaging to the Benelux market.”
Martin Herrenbrück, President & General Manager Europe at SIG
