Sabic is the first company to use an innovative chemical recycling process to return mixed plastic waste to its original polymer. In this way, the company aims to drive forward the circular economy.

The ISCC-certified recycled polymers are produced using pyrolysis oil, which is obtained from mixed plastic waste. This is planned, the alternative raw material in future at the Chemelot plant in Geleen (Netherlands).

The processing technology used by Sabic converts mixed plastic waste back into Original polymers for quality applications. This contributes to the cycle of recycling natural resources. Although mechanical recycling processes also contribute to the circular economy, the economically recyclable quantities of plastic packaging waste are limited. The certified process, on the other hand, reintroduces to as-new polymers and thus represents a real alternative to mechanical methods, closing the recycling loop.

„To make the transition from a linear to a circular economy while meeting the needs of our customers and consumers, the value of plastics in waste streams must be preserved and maximised. We are committed to investing in the necessary scientific and technological expertise, fostering close partnerships with customers and suppliers and are proud to be the first company in the industry to implement this innovative chemical recycling process on a large scale.“

The company plans to build a partially commercialised Plant for refining and processing pyrolysis oil as a resource for circular polymers. The complete series production of this plant is scheduled to start in 2021.
