Sappi Europe has the consultation launched in July for the possible decommissioning of several plants at the Alfeld site.

As part of the measures, paper machines 1 and 4, offline coater 2 and sheet finishing will be shut down permanently. The aim of the restructuring is to improve the mill's profitability and competitiveness.

The closures will lead to a reduction of around 180 jobs, which, according to the company, will be realised through vacant positions, voluntary agreements and, if necessary, redundancies. Sappi emphasises that the process will be carried out in a responsible and socially responsible manner.

Focus on speciality and barrier securities

The closures are Part of the strategic realignment of Sappi Europe, which is intended to adapt production capacities to market demand. In future, the Alfeld mill will focus on speciality and high-barrier papers. „By concentrating production on the remaining machines, we are strengthening our ability to reliably serve customers and position the Alfeld mill for future market requirements,“ said Misa Bursac, VP Manufacturing, R&D and Technology at Sappi Europe.
