Sappi invests in new technology for barrier coating

Paper manufacturer Sappi is introducing a new barrier coating technology for functional paper packaging at its speciality paper mill in Alfeld, Germany.

Paper manufacturer Sappi is expanding its barrier coating capacities and introducing a new barrier coating technology for functional paper packaging at its speciality paper mill in Alfeld, Germany.

With this investment, Sappi aims to strengthen its position as one of the world's leading providers of sustainable paper packaging solutions. For the company, the decision represents a „Milestone in sustainable packaging“.

According to the company, the demand for innovative, truly sustainable solutions for paper and cardboard packaging continues to grow enormously. The aim is therefore to offer customers solutions that over the traditional film and foil-based material solutions beyond. In direct cooperation with the brand owners, the aim is to create future-orientated circular solutions that are in line with the growing collective global responsibility.

Expanding new barrier coating technology

Sappi had already expanded its expertise in the production of barrier papers through the acquisition of Rockwell Solutions.

The current expansion of capacities in Alfeld plant means a significant increase in performance. The aim of this unique combination of paper, dispersion and coating technology is to provide customers with even More competitive and attractive paper packaging solutions to offer. The company wants to „continue to challenge the conventional packaging industry with new ideas and solutions and thus make its contribution to the world and continue to pursue the circular economy strategy.“

Sappi announces that once the new plant is up and running, the new products will be from mid-2022 can be supplied.
