Schütz is investing in a highly automated production site for Intermediate Bulk Containers at BASF’s main plant in Ludwigshafen. The facility is set to secure the supply of industrial packaging from the third quarter of 2026 onwards.
The construction of a new production site for Intermediate Bulk Containers (IBCs) in Ludwigshafen marks a significant step in optimising industrial packaging supply chains. Schütz and BASF have signed an agreement for the construction of the highly automated production and storage facility, which will be built directly at BASF's headquarters. Construction work is scheduled to begin in the third quarter of 2026.
Strategic Partnership for Maximum Efficiency
The close proximity between Schütz's new production plant and the BASF headquarters in Ludwigshafen offers decisive advantages. The companies emphasise that the ability to minimise transport routes and ensure 24/7 just-in-time deliveries will significantly increase supply security.
As part of a new supply concept, not only a state-of-the-art production facility will be built, but also a digitised packaging materials warehouse will be introduced. This is intended to promote the reuse and recycling of used packaging containers.
Historical Cooperation as a Foundation
The partnership between BASF and Schütz boasts a long tradition, stretching back to the 1960s. A significant milestone was the development of the world's first IBC in 1975, which went on to become the standard in industrial packaging. This longstanding collaboration forms the foundation for the current project and highlights the strategic importance of the cooperation for both companies.
