Marine algae reduce the use of plastic

The ConProSachet system from Handtmann does not use plastic film, but packs products in a material made from seaweed from Notpla.

Liquid and pasty foods can be packaged with the Handtmann ConProSachet system. The system does not use plastic film, but a material made from Notpla seaweed.

The material from Emergency plan is made from seaweed. The advantage of the material is that the bags are edible - can simply be consumed - or disposed of in organic waste after use, as they biodegrade within a few weeks. This is particularly relevant in catering and food service in view of the strong trend towards eating out and snacking, as well as for convenience and ready-meals, as this is where the use of organic waste is particularly important. Ready-made sauces, dips, dressings, jams and much more in small, separately packaged containers. individual portions can be used.

The ConProSachet technology is based on a coextrusion process in which at the same time as the filling of the respective product a casing is produced from Notpla's seaweed material parallel to the filling process instead of using a prefabricated plastic film. This is made possible by a specially moulded coextrusion head, which forms a tube from the initially pasty seaweed material in the first step. The product is then filled in. Circumferential dividing elements tie the filled continuous tube and divide it into a continuous chain of filled individual portions, the so-called sachets.

The seaweed material gels out completely and thus seals the sachets, which are then separated into individual portions. The Reliable closure of the sachets is created by a uniform and precise closure that is only a few tenths of a millimetre thick. The individual process steps from the production of the casing to the sealing of the products are precisely coordinated in terms of both time and space, as the forming and secure sealing of the ends must take place while the gelling process of the seaweed paste has not yet been fully completed. The resulting Individual sachets surrounded by an elastic gel shell can be further processed and packaged.

The ConProSachet system is energy efficient designed, intuitive to use and quick to convert to different sachet sizes. This is made possible by the simple exchange of the coextrusion head and the conveyor belts with dividing elements, which are designed as format parts. The system for the industrial production of sachets was developed in consultation with Notpla, the British company for innovative materials and winner of the Earthshot Prize for environmental innovation. Notpla stands for „Notplastic“ and is committed to developing completely natural packaging solutions.
