DS Smith has developed a packaging solution with a second use for the Funzy children's sofas. The corrugated cardboard shipping packaging offers product protection and can be converted into a shelf including plug-in figures.
The successful start-up Funzy was looking for sustainable shipping packaging for its high-quality, German-made play sofas. Their product is a sofa and toy in one to inspire children to develop creatively, freely and with imagination. The Funzy play sofa provides the playful basis for this thanks to its versatility.
DS Smith had the ambition to realise Funzy's sustainable and creativity-boosting vision in shipping packaging as well. With its proactive approach, the company was able to convince its customer to consider an innovative solution beyond standard commercial packaging. The new shipping packaging for Funzy combines Product protection for online shipping directly to end customers with sustainability. This is because the packaging can be converted into a shelf and toys, giving it a second use. The base flap of the packaging contains punched holes that can be assembled into child-friendly plug-in figures - rocket and rocking horse. Following successful test shipments, the packaging is now going into series production.

Both Funzy and DS Smith attach great importance to sustainability and environmentally friendly materials, which is why the new shipping box is largely made of recycled paper and can easily be returned to the recycling cycle after its second life by being disposed of in waste paper. In this way, new packaging is created from the recycled waste paper - a paper fibre can be recycled more than 20 times in total. Julian Rasp, Account Manager at DS Smith Packaging Germany & Switzerland, says: „We are delighted to have found a partner in Funzy that also contributes to the circular economy with high-quality, durable products.“ The Secondary use of the packaging material strengthens the environmental awareness of children and parents and encourages them to carry out their own upcycling projects. The Sturdy double-wall packaging ensures safe product transport and also takes part in all the big and small play adventures.
The customised packaging with additional uses is just as well thought out as the modular play sofas from Funzy. With the new packaging solution, the Unpacking as a learning process and experience for the whole family. Children and parents discover the many possibilities and properties of corrugated cardboard together. The high-quality, two-colour printed packaging solution reflects Funzy's brand identity and adapts to the new shape of the box even after conversion. Both the corrugated cardboard shelf and the play figures can be easily personalised with paint or stickers thanks to the craft-friendly material, which stimulates children's creativity.
