SIG reports significant sales growth of 15 per cent for its sustainable Terra portfolio in 2024. With 1.7 billion litres of bottled food, the company says it is setting new standards in environmentally friendly packaging technology.

The demand for particularly sustainable packaging continues to increase worldwide: this is also reflected in the significant growth of SIG's Terra portfolio. In 2024, sales of corresponding packaging materials for aseptic carton packs increased by 15 per cent. According to the company, the growth of the Terra portfolio is therefore significantly higher than the general increase in sales in the cartonboard segment, which was around six per cent (adjusted for currency effects).

In total, around 1.7 billion litres of food were filled into packaging from the Terra range last year. Since the market launch, the quantity produced adds up to packaging for around six billion litres. SIG has thus reached another milestone in its sustainability strategy, it says.

Market presence in Europe and China expanded

The portfolio developed particularly strongly in the European market, where Terra solutions accounted for 9.3 per cent of aseptically packaged food. Worldwide, this share was 4.1 per cent. New impetus was also generated in China: The successful market launch of the SIG Terra Alu-free + Full barrier variant underlines the international potential of the product line.

Technological focus on material efficiency and recyclability

SIG sees sustainable packaging not only as an ecological goal, but also as a technological one. The Terra portfolio includes packaging materials without an aluminium layer as well as variants with polymers based on forest-based or recycled raw materials. Certified mass balance systems would link these to recognised environmental standards. The range also includes recyclable bag-in-box solutions and stand-up pouches with closures.

A decisive advantage is the compatibility of Terra materials with existing filling systems: companies can therefore switch to more sustainable packaging solutions without having to invest in new machines - an aspect that, according to SIG, makes the changeover even easier.
