SIG uses 100 per cent renewable energy in the production of its carton packaging. From January 2023, the company will cover the electricity requirements for all carton packaging production plants in Germany with physical power purchase agreements.
SIG has been the first and only manufacturer of aseptic carton packs to produce all its carton packs worldwide using 100 per cent renewable energy since 2018. Now the company has taken another step on the „Way Beyond Good“ for the planet and invested directly in physical power purchase agreements (PPAs). SIG is thus securing sufficient capacity for renewable energy to operate all German production plants for carton packaging 100 per cent from January 2023.
„Securing renewable energy through physical power purchase agreements for the production of our carton packs is the highest achievable level of responsible energy sourcing. In addition to our growing global portfolio of on-site solar installations at our production sites, we see physical power purchase agreements as the most sustainable way to invest directly in renewable energy capacity.“

From January 2023, all SIG carton packaging production plants in Germany will cover 100 per cent of their electricity requirements via physical power purchase agreements. They consist of a combination of energy generated by on-site solar systems at the SIG production sites, renewable electricity from on-shore wind power plants in Germany, which goes to SIG in real time, and a flexible top-up from hydropower - provided by the energy supplier Enovos Energie Deutschland GmbH. The purchase of energy via physical PPAs means that renewable energy is generated by allocated power producers within the energy supplier's balancing network and delivered directly to SIG.
Originally, SIG sourced renewable energy mainly indirectly via guarantees of origin (Guarantees of Origin). However, the company wants to go even further with its Climate+ commitment. In future, an even larger proportion of renewable electricity also purchased directly at other locations outside Germany via power purchase agreements, that support further investment in renewable energies as part of the global energy mix.
The company has several Further on-site solar systems in the pipeline - including at the German production sites in Linnich and Wittenberg, at the production site in Saudi Arabia and at the new SIG plant currently being built in Mexico. This will triple SIG's global solar capacity, which can be generated locally at the production sites.
