The German Design Council has honoured OutNature, a brand of the environmental services provider PreZero, with the German Design Award 2022 in Gold for Silphie paper.
The ecological packaging and paper material made from the energy plant Silphie convinced the jury with its good printing and processing properties as well as its natural look and feel. The Silphie paper was awarded gold in the „Excellent Product Design“ category in the „Material and Surfaces“ category.
„OutNature uses the Silphie fibres that are produced during the production of biogas, a regional plant raw material, to produce an ecological packaging and paper material with a unique character. The company separates the plant fibres from the energy crop using a biothermal process and obtains high-quality paper, Resource-saving natural fibres, which are further processed together with pulp into Silphie paper. A sensible bioeconomic cascade utilisation of the regional energy plant silphia,“ says the official jury statement.
„Silphia is a perennial crop that is particularly insect-friendly thanks to its long flowering period and promotes local biodiversity. At the same time, it enriches the soil with humus, stores CO2 and protects the soil from wind and water erosion. We use this unique plant to produce our innovative silphia paper as the basis for sustainable packaging solutions. Winning the internationally renowned German Design Award 2022 in gold is a very special honour for us, which further encourages us and gives our market entry an additional boost.“ Thomas Tappertzhofen, OutNature Managing Director
At the end of 2020, OutNature received the German Packaging Award, followed by the prestigious WorldStar Award from the World Packaging Organisation (WPO) at the beginning of 2021. Recently, Silphie paper has already been at Kaufland and Lidl in the fruit and vegetable department used.
