From 1 to 4 February 2026, ProSweets Cologne will show how artificial intelligence (AI), smart sensor technology and data-driven systems are changing the production and packaging of confectionery and snacks. The focus will be on flexible systems, vision technologies and generative assistance systems designed to increase efficiency and quality.

Advancing digitalisation is increasingly shaping the confectionery and snack industry. Manufacturers are faced with the challenge of quickly retooling systems, managing a wide range of variants and ensuring stable production output at the same time. AI-supported systems, intelligent sensors and cloud-based data analyses should help to make processes more transparent and adaptable. According to Guido Hentschke, Director of ISM Ingredients and ProSweets Cologne, only those who are open to new technologies and actively embrace modernisation will remain competitive.

Intelligent sensors as a key technology

Smart sensors with integrated microprocessors are increasingly taking on analysis and forecasting functions. They enable continuous condition monitoring and form the basis for data-based decisions. 2D and 3D vision sensors in particular are becoming increasingly important: they recognise product deviations, different formats and packaging types in real time, thus ensuring high system availability.

AI assistance systems and vision technologies

Generative chatbots and AI assistants support operating personnel by automating routine tasks and guiding them through format changes. Their knowledge base is constantly growing thanks to machine learning. Combined with modern image processing, AI-supported robots take over pick-and-place tasks and react flexibly to product diversity. Advanced vision systems also check the colour, shape and completeness of products in quality assurance and detect foreign objects or defective goods in real time.

Prospects for efficiency and sustainability

AI and machine learning are considered key technologies for ensuring quality, conserving resources and making processes more resilient. In addition to productivity and quality standards, ProSweets Cologne also addresses structural issues such as the shortage of skilled labour, increasing cost pressure and sustainable packaging solutions. The accompanying event programme offers insights into new technologies and strategies for strengthening the industry's competitiveness.
