With an innovative bag-in-box system for applications in the detergent, oil and chemical industries, Smurfit Westrock wants to replace HDPE containers and reduce the proportion of plastic by up to 75 per cent.
Packaging manufacturer Smurfit Westrock has developed Powergrip, a new bag-in-box system that can replace conventional plastic canisters made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE). The innovation is aimed in particular at Applications in the detergent, oil and chemical industries and supports companies in preparing for the upcoming requirements of the EU packaging regulation (PPWR) to be set.
New standards in functionality and sustainability
Powergrip was developed at the Belgian plant in Turnhout and consists of made from a sturdy cardboard box with integrated pouring aid and a vacuum inner bag. This combination not only makes one-handed pouring easier, but also prevents the typical „sloshing“ of the contents thanks to the vacuum technology - which significantly reduces the risk of spillages. According to the manufacturer, the plastic content is up to 75 per cent lower than comparable HDPE containers.
„With the new Powergrip, we are demonstrating how regulatory challenges can be transformed into practical and economical solutions. The development is proof that sustainability and efficiency are no longer mutually exclusive, but mutually reinforcing.“
Matthias Hoskens, General Manager at Smurfit Westrock Van Mierlo
Europe-wide demand due to new legislation
The background to the new development: from 2030, stricter requirements will apply in the EU to avoid plastic waste and promote recyclable packaging solutions. Companies are required to reorganise their packaging systems especially in the B2B sector, where large-volume plastic containers have been the standard up to now. With Powergrip, manufacturers now have a market-ready solution, which can be integrated into existing logistics processes and also helps to fulfil the new regulations.
