Matrix is the industry's first paper-based, recyclable packaging for soft cheeses that provides a breathable barrier and is paraffin-free. The cheese pack can therefore be recycled in the paper stream.
The Matrix range has now been extended with a packaging innovation award sponsored by Dow in silver. Michael Zacka, President Amcor Flexibles EMEA: „Matrix's paraffin-free technology brings soft cheese packaging into the circular economy and we are delighted with the Dow award. Matrix is another step in the right direction for Sustainability in combination with performance - It offers cheese producers improved flavour control and recyclability.“
Matrix works without paraffin
Soft cheese continues to mature even after packaging. It is therefore necessary to Control the process through moisture absorption and gas exchange. Over the years, cheese manufacturers have generally used paper packaging with a paraffin (wax) coating. While this offers some advantages, the paraffin can easily transfer to the cheese product and affect the flavour.
Matrix's breathable technology enables soft cheese producers to control the ripening process and deliver the right flavour and texture to consumers throughout the cheese's shelf life. In addition Matrix extends the storage time of the packaging material to up to 12 months compared to only six months for paraffin-based packaging.

The other challenge with traditional paraffin-coated packaging is that the paper is difficult to recycle. According to Amcor, the Matrix range is a sustainable option thanks to its independently tested recyclability in the paper stream. As a partner in the New Plastics Economy of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation this innovation supports the packaging manufacturer's commitment to develop all of its packaging in such a way that it is recyclable or reusable by 2025.
The Dow-sponsored Packaging Innovation Awards The awards recognise the industry's achievements in the areas of packaging design, materials, technology and processes.
