The third SOLPACK - International Conference for Sustainable Packaging took place in Hamburg on 5 and 6 June 2019. More than 110 participants took advantage of the high-calibre presentations to find out about the latest developments and future trends and to exchange ideas with participants from the entire supply chain.
New contacts for recyclable film solutions, new paper-based barrier packs and potential software solutions for testing recyclability on an international level were already being utilised during the conference.
New solutions for recyclability
The new film solutions from Extendo, Huhtamaki and Maag demonstrated on the first day that High-barrier packs can also be recycled can be. Similar developments have been taking place in paper-based materials for one to two years.
What Pacoon demonstrated at ProSweets 2019 in Cologne using a biscuit pack is already very real with new coatings and laminates in combination with paper, as the Fraunhofer IVV and the PTS Papiertechnische Stiftung were able to show.
The fact that a composite of paper and film or polymer not automatically in the combustion The panel discussion with PTS, INGEDE and VENADO made it clear that paper does not have to end, but can be recycled. However, there is still no generally applicable rule as to what can be recycled - the paper industry is working on this and is interested in cooperating with companies.
As an innovation, a New paper cooler bag which can not only replace plastic bags from the supermarket as a renewable, reusable solution, but also has a significantly better cold-storage function than the PE-ALU variants. The bag is made of almost 100 % paper and is easily recyclable. In cooperation with Pacoon, FRESH!PACKING wants to establish these bags on the market in the coming months.

Impetus for the industry and associations from Down Under
In addition to the many new solutions in the field of materials, a presentation by Brooke Donnelly from the Australian Packaging Convenant Organisation (APCO) was astonishing. Germany may be a pioneer in recycling technology, but Down Under, recycling has been used for years. Government and business side the company strong support The company offers support in developing more sustainable solutions - in the form of training, advice, funding and a network that works together on solutions.
The number of participating companies speaks for itself: the organisation already has over 1,500 member companies and the number is growing rapidly. As a result, the general debate is no longer „whether something needs to happen“, but rather „what can be realised and how“.
Very good response
As with the first two conferences, the response to SOLPACK 3.0 was very positive. If you missed the conference, you can watch the Lectures as a package request them from Pacoon for a fee. A new event date is not yet known.

From the development of the corporate or packaging strategy to conceptualisation, design, testing, certification and reporting at an international level: such a Co-operation network, Pacoon is currently compiling a catalogue that will serve as a contact point for all company needs. To this end, the expertise of the experts Norma Stangl from Forschgruen.de, PREP Design as a software testing tool for recyclability on an international level and Greenstreets/GRIPS for quantity reporting are to be bundled.
To give companies a All-round service further partnerships on corporate strategy as well as total cost and process optimisation are currently being established. The approach is already bearing fruit in the form of requests for advice and material research, in-house workshops for the cooperation partners' customers and training courses on the basics of sustainable packaging[/infotext].
