Solutions for the circular plastics economy at K 2022

At its stand at K 2022, Fraunhofer CCPE will be providing information on solutions relating to the circular plastics economy.

At its stand at K 2022, Fraunhofer CCPE will be providing information on solutions relating to the circular plastics economy. The web-based self-check tool CRL, sustainable reusable transport boxes and background information on Caucasian recycling and circular product design will also be on show.

In the Fraunhofer Cluster of Excellence Circular Plastics Economy CCPE six institutes of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft are working together with partners from industry to develop System services and product innovations for a sustainable circular plastics economy. Because we are still stuck in a linear plastics economy worldwide, recycling systems are inefficient, and only Few plastic recyclates achieve such a high quality, that they can become new products. On the K the cluster is now presenting the latest research results.

How circular is a product?

The web-based self-check tool Circular Readiness Level has already established itself. With its help, companies can analyse their Subject products, services or business models to a self-test for circularity. It provides answers to questions such as: What is the multifunctionality, repairability or dismantlability of the product? Is end-of-life recyclability possible? Does the product consist of secondary, renewable or biodegradable plastics? In a second step, companies receive both a Assessment of the circular readiness level of your product as well as recommendations for further steps.

With the reusable transport packaging for B2C food shipping, Fraunhofer CCPE is demonstrating a sustainable plastic packaging, the potential of circular plastic compounds with innovative manufacturing processes for component production combines. In addition to the innovative monomaterial approach made from newly developed bio-based polylactide (PLA) particle foams Systems for traceability through integrated sensor technology and an associated digital twin presented. The data collected provides added value for the customer, for example to prove an unbroken cold chain, and enables pooling system operators to carry out valuable analyses for logistics and business model optimisation as well as the right R strategy - based on the ageing effects of the plastics.

Also on display is the concept for a Optimised recycling cascade for plastic waste that can no longer be recycled using conventional mechanical processes, e.g. mixed packaging waste, shredder residue or composite materials. The input materials are pre-sorted by AI and treated using a combination of three innovative recycling technologies. This concept significantly improves the quality of the plastic recyclates and increases the product yield.
