The organic pioneer starts 2020 with an innovation in the area of packaging. Thanks to improved flavour protection bags for the teas, the wooden foil wrapping can be removed from all boxes.

"The packaging of our products has been a high priority from the very beginning. The aim is to protect the valuable ingredients of our teas and spices in the best possible way - but always with a clear conscience towards the environment," explains Sonnentor's founder Johannes Gutmann.

Back in 2008, the company started using materials from renewable raw materials like wood in packaging. Strengthened since 2016 our own packaging manager the team.

"Now it's time for the next step: reduction. Thanks to new innovative packaging, we can save thousands of kilograms of material. That's good news for us and, of course, for the environment."

The new bag scheme

The previous infusion bag sleeves of the double chamber bags contained a polypropylene flavour protector. This is now replaced by an improved barrier which consists of wooden foil. Thanks to the improved flavour protection, no additional packaging is required on the outside of the tea boxes. But this is not the only area where material is saved. Thanks to a thinner paper for the infusion bag sleeves, the Paper consumption reduced by a further 22,000 kg per year. The colours used for printing on the new bags are also compostable.

In addition, the cardboard of all boxes now comes from responsible forestry. There is an additional further development in spices: bestsellers such as turmeric, pepper and oregano are already being into a 30 per cent thinner wooden foil packed. There has also been a change to the tinplate shakers. The PET viewing window not required with the new variant.

"It is important to us to give our fans a transparent insight into what we do and to talk openly about the disposal of our packaging. For this reason, we are launching a focus on this topic in February. 'Finally a sensible dirt bucket campaign' - that's the slogan," explains Gutmann.
