Sonoco is merging its metal packaging and rigid paper packaging divisions in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia-Pacific into a new unit: Sonoco Consumer Packaging EMEA/APAC.

The merger combines Sonoco's expertise in two complementary packaging areas - metal solutions such as cans, lids and aerosol packaging as well as dimensionally stable paper packaging. According to the company, customers will benefit from a broader product portfolio, more efficient processes and cross-material consulting in future. The aim is to offer a comprehensive range of sustainable packaging solutions that take into account both performance and environmental aspects.

Howard Coker, President and CEO of Sonoco, explained: „The combination of two complementary packaging areas strengthens our ability to offer relevant, sustainable and innovative solutions that meet the changing needs of FMCG brands.“

Seàn Cairns, who has been with Sonoco for 17 years and previously headed up the Rigid Paper Containers division, has been appointed President of the new division. He emphasises that Sonoco is now the only manufacturer in the world to offer both types of packaging in one organisation and can therefore recommend the most suitable solution for each product.
