Stora Enso is increasing its focus on specialised pulp grades and investing in production at the Finnish site Enocell and the Swedish site Skutskär. The aim is to support the growing consumer demand for unbleached, renewable packaging material.

By increasing the proportion of unbleached kraft pulp (UKP) in the pulp portfolio, the company is setting new standards. Stora Enso the strategic path, more specialised Nordic pulp grades and at the same time optimise the proportion of standard pulp. Long-term trends indicate that consumers prefer less bleached or brown fibre-based renewable packaging products.

After of the investment of 38 million euros the Enocell site will be able to flexibly produce UKP and Nordic bleached softwood kraft pulp (NBSK). Due to the reduced use of bleaching chemicals, the carbon footprint per tonne of UKP produced will be more than 20 percent lower than the equivalent amount of bleached pulp currently produced at the Enocell site. The investment is expected to be completed in the last quarter of 2024.

The EUR 42 million investment in improving fluff pulp production at the Skutskär site strengthens Stora Enso's position as the leading fluff pulp producer in Europe. The modernisations will enable the Group to meet customer demand for certain roll sizes, improve occupational safety and increase pulp production at the Skutskär site. The investment is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2024.

The annual capacity of Stora Enso's Enocell mill is 630,000 tonnes of pulp and that of Stora Enso's Skutskär site is 545,000 tonnes of pulp.
