Stuttgart Media University (HdM) is modernising its range of courses: from autumn 2025, the former Bachelor of Packaging Technology will become the new Technical Product Management - Technical Design course. With two specialisations, the programme is responding to the growing demands for sustainable and complex product developments.
Today, products have to do far more than just be functional: Globally networked supply chains, fast innovation cycles and increasing expectations of sustainability require engineers to have an extended skills profile. Stuttgart Media University is taking this development into account and is reorganising its traditional packaging technology degree programme. The reformed Bachelor's degree programme in Technical Product Management - Technical Design will start in the winter semester 2025/2026. Applications can be submitted until 15 July 2025.
„With this reorientation, we are placing particular emphasis on combining technical expertise and creative product development,“ explains Dean of Studies Prof Dr Michael Herrenbauer. „Our students learn how to implement innovative ideas in a practical way and gain in-depth knowledge of the entire product life cycle - from the initial idea to market success.“
Two specialisations: Management or Design
The newly designed degree programme offers two areas of specialisation:
The Technical Product Management specialisation focuses on the strategic planning and management of products. Technological, economic and coordinative skills required for the organisation of complex product development and innovation processes are taught.
The second specialisation, Technical Design, focuses on material, product and packaging development. Here, students acquire expertise in mechanics, logistics and user experience. Special attention is paid to sustainable packaging solutions that fulfil ecological and aesthetic requirements in addition to pure product protection.

Practical relevance and modern equipment
The close integration of theory and practice remains a central element of the study concept. In workshops and laboratories at the HdM, students can experiment with various materials and process technologies and realise prototypes through to small series. Modern machines, systems and digital technologies are available to develop and optimise innovative product ideas under realistic conditions.
Good prospects for graduates
After seven semesters, students graduate with a Bachelor of Engineering. The career prospects are considered excellent: Graduates are in demand in the manufacturing industry, the technology and innovation sector as well as at branded goods manufacturers and retail companies - for example in technical product management, packaging management or product development.
It is possible to start the programme in both the winter and summer semesters. Due to the limited number of admissions, applications for the coming winter semester must be submitted by 15 July 2025.
Further information on the new study programme is available directly on the website of the Stuttgart Media University.
