Südpack honoured for printing technology

In November, Südpack was honoured in Baden-Württemberg as one of the „100 companies for resource efficiency“ for its SPQ technology.

The state government and leading trade associations in Baden-Württemberg have launched the „100 companies for resource efficiency“ initiative. Südpack is one of these 100 companies and was honoured for its SPQ technology in November.

The initiative moves Companies with exemplary efficiency measures in the public eye. The abbreviation SPQ stands for Sustainable Print Quality and for a new type of printing technology from South pack. The innovative process offers Advantages in terms of sustainability, efficiency and quality - and is a milestone in packaging printing.

The prerequisite for using the technology is a Continuous standardisation of machine and process parameters as well as intelligent colour management with a standardised colour palette. Among other things, this results in a lower number of colour changes and reduced ink application while at the same time significantly increasing the level of quality. The latter also makes print adjustments and print approvals on site obsolete, thus reducing production waste. Another advantage: the Cliché production can be water-based and therefore also keeps solvent consumption low in the cleaning process. Overall, the optimisation of ink, solvent and energy consumption as well as the reduction in film waste have a direct impact on CO2-Balance sheet of the printed packaging films.

„With SPQ, we reduce the use of ink and solvent waste in the realisation of printed images by more than 60 percent in the best-case scenario.“

With the successful implementation of the first pilot projects in 2021, the technology was awarded the German Packaging Award in Gold as well as in the Economy category. Demand for this printing process is now increasing - and the first customer orders are running on the machines. „The entire food industry offers enormous potential for SPQ. Our aim is to use SPQ technology in close consultation with our customers for the majority of the production of printed packaging films,“ emphasises Valeska Haux. In parallel, intensive work is being done on the Optimisation and further development of the technology, to „harmonise quality and sustainability even better.“

With SPQ, the company has rightly joined the exclusive circle of „100 companies for resource efficiency“ this year, according to the expert committee of the showcase project. After all, examples of excellence such as this „show how resource efficiency can be implemented in practice and the benefits associated with it.“

„We at Südpack are convinced that improving resource efficiency and the life cycle assessment as a whole is a central task for politics, science and, above all, industry. As one of the leading film manufacturers, but above all as a responsible family business, this topic is of particular relevance to us - and we hope that this initiative will encourage other companies to get involved.“
