With Dr Thorsten Thümen, Sumitomo (SHI) Demag Plastics Machinery GmbH has engaged a recognised expert and thus strengthened its commitment in the field of application and process engineering.
Dr Thorsten Thümen joined the company on 1 April 2019 and, as Head of Process Engineering, will be responsible for the realignment of the Application/Process Engineering, Training, Plasticising Technology and Technical Developments divisions. Industry 4.0 continue to drive the company forward. He replaces Andreas Schramm, who was Head of the Application Engineering and Training department and has left the company.
Dr Thorsten Thümen studied mechanical engineering at the University of Paderborn, specialising in plastics processing. He completed his doctorate on the optimisation of plasticising systems. The 44-year-old specialist from Paderborn also has many years of experience in research and development tasks in the machine sector (injection moulding).
The teams working under Dr Thümen now report to an Application Centre (AC). This centre, which was set up specifically to improve internal cooperation between the two production sites in Schwaig and Wiehe, is also dedicated to finding solutions to customer process problems with a focus on Process optimisation in real time, customer support and training. Mastering future requirements for plastics production
CEO Gerd Liebig has good reasons for putting Dr Thümen in charge of customer support and problem-solving strategies: „Our customers want and need to increase their production efficiency in order to remain competitive. We help them to respond to market needs not only by advising and supporting them in matters of application technology, but also by providing them with professional development technology services that are customised to their needs. Under the aegis of Dr Thümen, the Sumitomo (SHI) Demag AC will focus on helping customers extremely quickly and with comprehensive industry knowledge.”
Last year, Sumitomo (SHI) Demag made considerable investments to reorganise its product portfolio and increase capacity at both German production sites. The Strategic reorganisation of both sites enabled shorter machine delivery times and an increase in panel production capacity of almost 50%.
The German-based machine manufacturer is now driving forward the development of the necessary technologies to further expand its leading position in the packaging market and use its expertise in application technology and precision injection moulding to boost growth in the automotive and medical technology sectors.
